Land of the Midnight Sun

Emily has been getting some gardening in while she can, the perennial garden is starting to boom after planting many things two summers ago and expanding a little last summer. The wild geraniums (purple flowers) are getting huge, the columbines are in full bloom and the delphiniums and asters are getting big but not quite blooming, maybe in July.

In the mixed perennial/annual garden, the wild irises and chives are getting really big and is the first to bloom. Emily is hoping that the asiatic lillies will bloom this year. For the past two years there have been no blossoms only foliage. Lastly, the tomato plants are getting HUGE! I finally bought some really large plants this year at the UAF plant sale to be sure that I get tomatos ripe from the vine this August. Every year (except the hot fire year) the tomatos have had to ripen off the vine in mid to late September because I get them going too late.

Today is summer solstice and we went downtown to enjoy the festivities, which means eat alot of junk food and listen to live music. Today is the longest day of the year, where we get about 22 hours of sunlight (24 hours of daylight though). After today, the days will get shorter, although we really won't see darkness until about early August. Also today, we picked up our first vegetable share from our local farm, Rosie Creek Farms, through their community supported agriculture program. Today we got a ton of green leafy vegetables, so we will be eating salads and cooked greens daily! Lastly, today was a day of celebration because our good friend, Jeff Oatley, finished his bicycle Race Across America in 7th place and the 1st American finisher! We were glad he made it to Atlantic City without any injury or major problems.

Our pickup of the camper has been delayed until June 30, so we are now trying to figure out what to do this weekend.

Your garden looks great, of course it doesn't hurt that there is 20+ hours of sunshine.

Enjoy those fresh vegies you are growing. What were your weekend plans? Tenting somewhere?
