I'm going to Jackson.....

Floating down the Snake River, Tetons in background

Last weekend we headed down to Jackson, WY to visit Emily's sister Anika for a long weekend. Our friend Julie, who used to live in Fairbanks, drove down from Butte, MT to meet us as well. We had a great time and lucked out with temperatures in the 60's and sunshine, our last dose of Vitamin D until we head on our winter vacation in the tropics.

The first day we strolled around town and checked out Anika's art in the Jack Dennis Gallery. She just finished a new piece and they put it in the front window. Luke stocked up on some flies and we grabbed lunch sandwiches and headed up north of Teton Park for the girls to soak in some hot springs and Luke and Joe (Anika's boyfriend) to do some fishing on the upper Snake River. The fishing was slow that day, but the scenery was great with the Tetons in the background.

The next day we talked Joe and one of his guides, Anthony, to float and fish the snake in their driftboats. Julie, Emily, and Anika floated in one boat, with the fisherman in another. It was an awesome warm and sunny day and the fishing was much better, with Luke landing about 10 Snake River cutthroat trout on dry flies (fortunately no cross-bows were caught...). Joe Joe caught a jim dandy cutthroat that had a regurgitated 5-inch whitefish hanging out of its mouth! After the float, Julie headed back to Butte, and we headed back to Anika's place for some great home-made elk lasagna cooked by her roommate Andrea (Elk courtesy of her friend J.D).

On Monday, we headed over the Teton Pass to Anika's old town of Victor, Idaho, and fueled up for lunch on Huckleberry milkshakes before a hike into Danby canyon, through some nice fir and aspen forests. We hiked up for about 2 hours and it started getting a little cool and drizzly, so we headed back down. The next morning we woke up to snow but the pass was clear by the time we had to drive back to Idaho Falls to catch our flight back to Alaska.

Well, last night we put the last replacement window in the house and we think we can tell the difference, it seems a bit warmer in the house. Temperatures are in the single digits now, and it should drop below zero soon. :(

We head out on November 30 to Thailand and Cambodia for a 7-week adventure. We'll be back January 18 and Emily goes back to her job at UAF and Luke will be taking a new job with a local company doing environmental consulting work.

Looks and sounds like a grand trip. Thanks for the shot of the Anika's gallery paintings. And the lead off photo of fishing on the river -- it looks like a beautiful painting. But it's a photo, right? Nice layout for Anika to paint.

And the fish were impressive too, Luke.
