The new camper

We drove down to Anchorage last weekend to pick up our new camper! It is a Jayco Sportster 7 (1975 we think) and it is in mint "like-new" condition. We stopped at Honolulu Creek about halfway between Anchorage and Fairbanks to camp for the night. It was a bit sketchy because the road wasn't really a road, and it was pretty tippy driving, but the Toyota made it. The camper has a bed over the cab, a seating/table area that converts into a small single bed for a short person, a double burner for cooking, a 3-way refridgerator (propane, 12V, or 110 power), and even a furnace for heating on cold nights! The only downside about it is that it is pretty slow going on the highway, because our truck only has a 4-cylinder engine... so at times it is 40 mph up the big hills. We are hoping to get it out this weekend and use it. Here are some photos:

Lastly, if you are thinking of coming up for our party on September 8, let us know and we can help you with finding a place to stay. Flights right now are running in the $700 price range from Minneapolis to Fairbanks and we have heard of recommendations to NOT fly Northwest Airlines because of flight cancellations this summer. However, so far, none of the flights to Anchorage or Fairbanks on NW have been canceled. Other airlines include Sun Country, Delta, United, Alaska Air, Frontier, America West, Continental, etc. You can get a cheaper ticket to Anchorage and then get a separate flight from Anchorage to Fairbanks on Alaska Airlines, Frontier Flying Service, or ERA Aviation, which will run about $200. Or else taking the train on the Alaska Railroad. Here is a link to accommodations in Fairbanks but in general, you can find a B&B for $60 and up for a double, and a hotel can run $100 and up. Camping is quite a bit cheaper of course. Other things to do in the area would be visit Chena Hot Springs or Denali National Park. Anyways, let us know if you need help.

Hi Linda,

This short hair stuff makes for some great bed-head! I'm actually thinking about going to the barber this week though.

See you soon.

Cool camper!!! Some of the best times of our life together have been spent on the road in small spaces. You guys have a blast!

We won't be with you in September, but will be sending good thoughts your way. We'll be somewhere in Texas -- or California -- or Missouri -- or New Hampshire. Our trip north is still in the planning stages. Obviously.
hugs,
Susan
