Kayaking this morning on Lake Atitlan

Today we woke up, did some reading in the hammock, then grabbed some breakfast. After breakfast we rented a kayak and cruised around the protected bay in Lake Atitlan where San Pedro is located. It is too choppy to leave the bay after about 10am or so, so we just stuck to San Pedro. Perhaps another day we will get up really early to canoe further from San Pedro, when it is calm. We also learned that security is much better here than it had been in the last few years, and now police patrol the popular hiking areas, but you still should go with a guide. Apparently there are marijauna fields around the town.

The weather is perfect, except for the high winds at night, it is probably in the mid to upper 70s and cools down to about 60 at night.

This would be an excellent place to study spanish for a few weeks. We checked out one spanish school that overlooks the lake. The classrooms are little outdoor open-air palapas in a beautiful garden, with one on one instruction. It is super cheap, for about $100 USD per week for 4 hour classes, accomodation and 3 meals per day with a family. A great deal.

Tomorrow we are taking a tour to Chichicastenengo, where they have their big Thursday craft market, one of the biggest in central america.

Glad to hear it is more secure than you thought. What are the chances the lake will be really calm while you are there, like in some of the beautiful photos?

It is calm early in the morning, around 6am to 9am.
