The beaches at Puerto Morelos are probably some of the most beautiful in all of Mexico. White sand, turquiose water, clean, and not very touristy compared to Cancun and Playa del Carmen. We took some time to go snorkeling and Luke's nephew Huck, age 7, got to go out snorkeling for his first time in the ocean.
Two years ago, Hurricane Wilma, a category 5 hurricane, destroyed many resorts along the coast, and unfortunately it also destroyed parts of the reefs. When we went snorkeling, some of the reefs were visibly dead but signs of new growth were everywhere, and fish were still abundant.
We got to see several angelfish, parrotfish, baracudas, rays (including the spotted eagle ray, about 4 feet wide), a GIANT puffer fish, etc.
