Cañon Sumidero, Chiapas

Yesterday we went on a tour to the Canyon Sumidero about an hour outside of San Cristobal. The river was dammed for hydroelectric power, but the limestone canyon was pretty spectacular, with walls towering about 800 meters above us. We took a lancha (fast boat) from the town of Chiapa de Corzo. We saw a few garzas (herons), sopelotes (vultures), cormorants, and very interesting limestone formation (caves, stalagmites, stalagtites, etc.). Unfortunately, there was also some trash floating down the river, with the most memorable being a dead dog floating down the river with a sopelote floating on top of it and feasting on it! Yuck! Anyways, we did get to see some live crocodiles as well, one was about 10 feet long (see photo below). We thought about how nice it would to canoe or raft down the river through the canyon, a totally different experience than in a fast boat, but we wouldn't want a crocodile to munch our raft!

Tomorrow we will probably head to the ruins of Palenque, a 5 hour busride to the northeast of San Cristobal.

Lastly, here are some Lucha Libre videos our friend took when we went to the wrestling event a back in early December: http://www.ballofdirt.com/entries/14857/219723.html
