Pueblos Mancomunicados

Yesterday morning we took the bus up into the mountains for some hiking through Sierra Norte Expediciones. They have an ecotourism program with small mountainous villages in the area as a way to provide some additional income for the locals through tourist spending.

We went to Llano Grande (population 150, elevation 10,000 ft ASL) and stayed in a small cabin. We hired a guide and went on a hike to the Mirador, a mountain peak of about 11,000 ft with grand views in almost all directions. After the hike we enjoyed some comida tipica (typical food from that region) which was nopal (cactus) salad, black beans, flank steak and the ubiquitous tortilla. That night it dipped down to about freezing and there was no heat the cabin so we used the 4 thick blankets to keep us warm. In the morning, we woke up early to some frost on the ground (which we are down here ttrying to escape!) and went for some more comida tipica, atole (a corn-based sweet soup) and home-made sweet bread like doughnuts. It wasn't enough, so we got a quesadilla and more black beans and took off for an early morning hike to some waterfalls. It was so great to be away from the cities and into the quiet and peaceful bosque (forest). The program has many different villages and hikes to choose from. They also have mountain biking trips as well. The prices are reasonable, about $12-20 for a guide per day per group and the cabins are $13 per person.

Tomorrow we go to Puerto Angel on the beach!

Wow! Gorgeous mountains and scenery. Now off to the ocean again, for some more water. You continue to have variety on your trip. Then back into the jungle and mountains again in Chiapas. Keep the pics coming.

Great shot of Luke on top of the peak. How long did it take him to get from the camera to that spot?
