Mèrida, Mexico

We arrived in Mèrida yesterday, luckily on a Sunday so we could enjoy Sunday on the Plaza Grande. Artisans were selling their crafts, several food stalls were open selling salbutes and panuchos (Yucatanean style tacos), and traditional dancing and music in front of the Palacio Gobierno. Later in the evening there was salsa dancing and music for the public to enjoy and participate in. Today we walked around town taking care of errands, flight arrangements, eating Lebanese food, and figuring where we want to go the next few days. We took a city tour this morning, visiting many historical buildings. Mèrida, like many other Mexican cities, was built upon a Mayan city. The Mayans were enslaved by the Spaniards and were forced to built these colonial buildings.

Tomorrow we are going to try and rent a car and head to the interesting nearby ruins of Uxmal, Kabah, and Labna, possibly with a cave stop if there is time. It should be a long day! We then plan on hitting either Celestun or Rio Lagartos to check out some pink flamingos.
